Flash floods cause fatalities and disappearances in Nepal-Tibet border region

What happened

Flash floods in the Nepal-Tibet border region have resulted in between 98 and more than 150 deaths, with hundreds of people reported missing.

Chinese authorities reported three deaths and significant casualties in Tibet's Gyirong county.

Why it matters

The missing individuals include at least 133 Indian, 54 American, and 33 British tourists, alongside more than 100 Nepalese citizens.

The scale of the missing population, which includes a significant number of international tourists, highlights the potential for a complex, multi-national search and rescue operation.

Context

The Prime Minister of Nepal has issued a call for national unity in response to the disaster.
