Jammu and Kashmir Assembly passes statehood resolution amid opposition protests
What happened
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah moved a resolution in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly seeking the immediate and urgent restoration of full statehood to the union territory.
The resolution, which references previous assembly resolutions from 2000 and 2024, was subsequently passed by the assembly.
BJP members protested the resolution by storming the well of the house, leading to the marshalling out of MLA Randhawa and the adjournment of the assembly until Monday.
Why it matters
The inclusion of references to autonomy and special status in the statehood resolution drew opposition from the BJP and subsequent protests in Jammu and Srinagar.
