SpaceX Starship completes first orbital flight and satellite deployment
What happened
SpaceX successfully launched its Starship vehicle into Earth orbit for the first time on Monday.
During the mission, the spacecraft deployed 26 Starlink V3 satellites, marking the first time Starship has delivered an operational payload to orbit.
Although the Super Heavy Booster 21 successfully separated and splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico, the spacecraft experienced the loss of one of its six Raptor engines during ascent.
Flight controllers ended the mission early, bringing the spacecraft back to Earth instead of completing the planned six orbits.
Why it matters
The successful orbital delivery of Starlink V3 satellites demonstrates progress toward SpaceX's goal of using Starship to expand its satellite network capacity and reduce launch costs, though the company's stock fell 2.2% following the mission.
Context
Starship is a two-stage, fully reusable, super heavy-lift launch vehicle powered by Raptor engines burning liquid methane and liquid oxygen.
As of September 28, 2026, the Starship program has conducted 14 launches, with 9 successful flights and 5 failures since its first full-stack test flight in April 2023.
