Passengers intervene during cockpit attack on FlyDubai flight

What happened

On September 30, a FlyDubai flight bound for Tel Aviv with 174 people on board experienced a mid-air emergency when the copilot allegedly attacked the captain, causing the aircraft to plunge toward the desert.

The captain managed to open the cockpit door while being stabbed, and a plumber and a dentist, along with other passengers, intervened to restrain the copilot.

A plumber reportedly seized the aircraft's controls during the descent, and passengers described the cockpit as covered in blood due to the repeated attacks on the captain.

Why it matters

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commended the passengers and crew for their actions and stated that those responsible for the attack will face significant repercussions.

Context

The accused copilot, 29-year-old Hamam al-Hammami, was born in the UAE to an Omani father and a Syrian mother and had been flagged as a security risk in 2024.
