Stampede at Kolkata Durga Puja pandal results in 19 deaths

What happened

A portion of the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata collapsed on the evening of Saptami due to crowd pressure, triggering a stampede that resulted in at least 19 deaths and an estimated 25 to 35 injuries.

Seven individuals arrested in connection with the incident, including committee officials, have been remanded to 10-day police custody by the Bankshal Court, while a Special Investigation Team and a separate judicial commission led by a retired Calcutta High Court justice conduct probes.

Authorities have prohibited the movement or immersion of the pandal's idols pending the completion of the investigation, though a symbolic immersion of the sacred Kalash was performed.

Why it matters

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced compensation of Rs 25 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 5 lakh for the injured, while the state government has formed a high-level committee to review crowd management, exit routes, and structural safety at major pandals.

Context

Eyewitnesses have attributed the stampede to narrow entry gates and inadequate lighting at the site.

Following the incident, the Odisha Police has requested local puja committees to enhance their own crowd management measures.
