Houthi forces launch missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabian cities

What happened

The Saudi-led coalition confirmed that Houthi rebels fired a ballistic missile at Riyadh at dawn on Saturday, which was intercepted by air defenses.

Houthi forces claimed responsibility for large-scale attacks against Saudi Arabia, specifically targeting Riyadh and the industrial hub of Yanbu, stating the strikes were retaliation for Saudi attempts to target Sanaa.

Coalition officials reported that air defenses also thwarted Houthi attempts to strike Taif, Baish, and Farasan, while a fire was reported at a fuel depot near Riyadh's international airport involving an Aramco tanker.

Why it matters

The United States has warned that the conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis could escalate rapidly following the attack on the capital, signaling heightened regional instability.

Context

These attacks occur amid a broader Houthi offensive launched in September 2026 to seize control of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, during which the group recaptured Yemen's Red Sea coastline and declared a blockade on specific shipping.

Separately, Saudi Arabia has shut its East-West pipeline following drone attacks that Iraqi authorities confirmed were launched from their territory.
